Although the total mortality rate due to heart disease in the USA has decreased in the last 20-30 years, this decrease is slower in women than in men. New research confirms that women than men may be in a more unfavorable condition after an initial heart attack. A study from JAMA shows that the risk of death within 1 month after the first heart attack and the risk of death within 6 months and the need for rehospitalization are higher in women than men. Researchers have determined that the 70% higher risk of death in women than men after the first heart attack may be due to a more severe course of the disease and complications associated with heart attack.

There are differences between the two sexes in terms of clinical symptomatology, epidemiology, risk factor prevalence, diagnostic methods and response to interventions of coronary artery disease. There are also diseases that are seen only during pregnancy or increase in degree in women. Gestational hypertension and gestational cardiomyopathy are two examples.
