Psychiatry

Psychiatry (psychopathology) is usually confused with other professions. Psychiatry is a medical service that treats mental diseases.
In this department, conditions like mental illness, anxiety, and physiological disorders are managed. These diseases are demonstrated by changes in thinking, behavior, and emotions. Psychiatry deals with the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

It is common to think that concepts such as mind and soul are independent of the functions of the body. The “soul concept”, which also gives its name to the psychiatry profession, refers to the functions of the brain related to emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
Like all functions, the functions that shape human existence are affected by both physical and external conditions. The degree of impact of changes in the body and external environment in the emergence of psychiatric diseases may vary from disease to disease.
While physical factors are quite effective on mental diseases, external factors (for example brain tumors) are also effective on mental traumas that occur in response to extraordinary situations experienced.

Treatment in psychiatry
Psychiatrists use various types of psychotherapy, medications, psychosocial interventions, and other treatments (such as electroconvulsive therapy or ECT) depending on the needs of each patient.
Different methods are used in the treatment of psychiatric diseases according to the features of the diseases. There are treatment methods applied directly to the body (medication, electroconvulsive therapy, etc.), as well as methods (psychotherapy) that target the emotional and intellectual characteristics of the person or the variables in their relationships.
The goal of psychotherapy is to eliminate or manage unpleasant symptoms so that the patient can feel better. Psychotherapy is a goal-oriented therapy that focuses on problem-solving.

Most drugs are used by psychiatrists in the same way as drugs used to treat high blood pressure or diabetes. Psychiatrists can prescribe medications to help treat mental disorders after completing comprehensive reviews.
Psychiatric medications can help treat imbalances in brain chemistry that are thought to play a role in some mental disorders. Patients on long-term medication will need to consult their psychiatrist periodically to monitor the effectiveness of the medication and possible side effects.
Other treatments are also available. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a medical treatment that involves the application of electrical currents to the brain, is often used to treat severe depression that doesn’t respond to other treatments.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are some of the new therapies used to treat certain mental disorders. Light therapy is used to treat seasonal depression. TMS is a highly effective device used in the treatment of long-term depression and this treatment is applied in our hospital.
